Overview:
From DJ Matt R:
Challenging load in. Currently no working elevator and won't be for some time. Load in one floor down from where we play. Stairs on opposite end of building from where load in happens. Carts usually available. Set up is next to large valuable vase. Be aware as they will remind the DJ about it. We can NOT do uplighting in this venue as no lights can be on the floor. ------ From a former DJ in 2012: |
The James J Hill Library is awesome, yet can be overwhelming. If you are doing a ceremony, STONGLY consider bringing a min-system since the dancefloor is on the opposite end (200 feet) away from the ceremony, and if they are using your Mic it may be a problem. If they are using a house mic (which they charge for) you may choose to stay in the back. I needed to put my coffin in a small space behind the JJ Hill statue and spiral staircase to stage left and ran 1 speaker due to music I was playing.
Your setup will also have you have a GIANT table to set up on. I used one speaker to my immediate left, but the angle of the table left something to be desired, so I put up lights directly to my right, and the other speaker in front of the right side of the table. You will also be put next to $100,000 vases so it goes without saying BE CAREFUL. The only challenging part about this venue is that the bar is on the opposite side of the room (where the ceremony takes place), and if you don’t get people engaged early you may have an empty dancefloor for a while. Don’t fret, they always come back . Security and staff are awesome and communicative, so ask for a small table/pitcher of water etc if you need it.
Parking is a pain in the butt, so get there early, and entrance is off kellogg. If you have a saturday show street parking is easy, fridays require a ramp.
Load-In:
It can be tricky. Ask ahead of time where they'd like you to load-in. If it's through the front door, it will likely be locked and you'll have to call Dawn who is the event manager to get it opened.
If it's from the back door, you will still need to be let in from Dawn. Call ahead to see which door they want you to load in and give yourself some extra time.
Parking around that area can be tough as well, time is money when it comes to your arrival at this venue.
Challenges:
This is a large, wide room and it's pretty tall. Keeping the speakers low to the ground will help. There is no venue microphone as far as I know (doesn't hurt to ask). You'll have to really turn the microphone up loud for the speeches to ensure those in the back can hear.
You'll be by an extremely expensive vase. Don't touch the vase, don't bump into the vase, don't even look at the vase :). You will want to make an announcement during your introduction that that vase is very expensive and if people want to come back to request a song, they need to be very, very careful of it.
Special Considerations:
We've had a couple complaints from Dawn the venue manager regarding some of our DJs in early 2015. She is a very nice person and I've always enjoyed working with her, but be sure to be on your A game and be polite. We're working hard to build this relationship because they do book us a lot of business. The reason we're sending you out there is because we know you'll help to build that relationship.
Extra Venue Call Questions:
Where should I load in from?
Do you have a cart I can use?
Do you have a venue microphone for speeches?
