St. Paul Hotel

Overview:

From DJ Mike H:

Mary Jo, the contact there, is one of Matt Rush's best friends and has high expectations.  We only send great MC's.  High class clients that spend a lot of money. Three locations - main ballroom, small main floor (JJ Hill room) and downstairs (M Street Cafe). Load in is challenging through loading dock, so allow extra time. Carts are avaiable, but can be difficult to find.

Load In:

You will be loading in through the loading dock on the side of the hotel. You are not allowed to load in through the main door. This will take a little more time, although the loading dock goes to the kitchen and then right to the ballroom, so it's not too bad. They should have carts available if you feel you need one, but ask ahead of time.

Special Considerations:

The St. Paul Hotel is one of our best venue relationships. They refer our DJs a lot and we want them to continue doing that. The St. Paul is one the nicest hotels in the COUNTRY, not just the state. People spend tons of money to have their wedding there, so the client and venue staff have much different expectations than if you were in a VFW.

Challenges:

I have only been in the main ballroom, so I can only speak on behalf of that room.

The cocktail hour is out in the foyer, but the dinner/dance is in the main ballroom. This will lead to you having to set up a speaker in the foyer so background music can play during cocktail hour. Then use the wired microphone to make the announcement for folks to move to the main ballroom.

The main ballroom itself isn't too challenging at all. You're set up right in the middle and it's not a huge room. It's big, but not overwhelming and you shouldn't have too many problems. The ceilings are high, but I've never had acoustic issues at the St. Paul Hotel.

Etc:

Here's a video from Matt regarding the St. Paul Hotel's set up from a customer's perspective

Extra Venue Call Questions:

What ballroom is the reception taking place at?

Where is the cocktail hour taking place at?

Do you have a cart I can use?

Where is the loading dock where I load my equipment in?

  1. If you're playing in the basement (M Street Cafe), allow extra time upon that extra time for the load-in: the narrow hallways down there are often plugged up with other items, and it's a haul going down, then snaking through to where you'll set up.

Otherwise: Mary Jo is amazing at what she does! Always defer to her experience, ask her what the norm is there, and pick up a few lessons if you can in how to perform customer service day-of with the clients- she's simply great at it.
