Vivian Ballroom & Grand Olympian (Banquets of MN)

Overview:

From DJ Mike H:

The Vivian Ballroom in Fridley, Minnesota is a relatively new wedding venue, which we've started to develop a relationship with. the company currently refers Midwest Sound, but have had some issues with them recently and are looking to open their options in who to refer for DJ. I want to send our top tier DJs to this venue to impress the event manager and staff with excellent service to the bride and groom, as well as being helpful and respectful to their staff.

The most noteworthy thing about this venue is that you'll plug into their system to play music. There will be somebody who can help you get plugged in once you arrive, but you'll have to email them (they prefer email) ahead of time to ensure that they'll know when you'll arrive and you can make sure somebody will be there to help you out. It's very simple to get yourself plugged in, they have a mixing board similar to the one that we have in our coffins. Just plug the laptop controller's RCA cord directly into the RCA plug of their mixing board. Viola, that should do it. They have a wireless microphone which you can use for announcements and speeches. So in theory, you could get away with only bringing the laptop and controller to the venue, but you should still bring the entire system as backup.

Another thing worth noting is the 'table' you'll be set up at. It's really more of a booth that they have the DJ at, you have to walk back in a hallway to get to your DJ booth and once you're in, you're trapped from the front and two sides, so you have to go back through the hallway to get from the booth to the ballroom. It's a little confusing to explain, but it'll immediately make sense once you arrive. Basically, it makes moving around from the DJ area to the main area where the guests will be more difficult. Putting yourself in strategic locations will be important for this venue.

The load-in is easy, pull your car right up to the door and move your stuff in.

Have fun! Let me know if you have any questions at all

Challenges:

It can always be challenging using a system that you're not used to. However, you're still going to be using our controller and laptop, you'll just be plugged into a different mixing board. Get in contact with the venue early and make sure you'll have some assistance getting plugged in. It should actually be an easier set up than the way we normally do it, because it's WAY less stuff.

It will also be challenging being a spot that doesn't allow you to easily move around. You might have to be walking around in front of the DJ booth and lean over to fade the music when you make announcements and start speeches, so you're already at the ballroom and don't have to do a big walk once the music is faded.

Special Considerations:

We are working hard to get this venue to refer us. I met with Leslie, the venue manager, back in February 2016. She was very nice, but I could tell she also took the job very seriously and every wedding is very important to her. Reaching out to her as soon as you possibly can will be very important, as she likes to be in contact with the vendors before the wedding. Her pet peeve is when DJs are difficult to get a hold of or find once the wedding is going on, so just be aware of that.

They have another location in Blaine, which is run by the same people.
