McNamara Alumni Center

Overview:

From DJ Mike H:

McNamara Alumni Center is a goofy looking place, but it's a pretty cool venue. It's in the heart of the U of M just one block away from TCF Bank Stadium.

The load-in is not too difficult. You'll park outside the main door and bring your equipment up to the stage which is where you'll be set-up for the entire event.

It has some high ceilings, weird angles and can honestly be an acoustic nightmare if you're not set up the right way. Put your speakers on the floor. It's important to contain the sound by keeping the waves low, so don't even use your speaker stands and but those babies right on the floor of the stage. Here's more from Matt back in 2012:

Here is a picture or the typical DJ set up at McNamara Alumni Center.  You set up on the stage.  Notice that the speakers are on the ground.  This helps DRAMATICALLY with the sound as the acoustics of the hall can get away from you very quickly.  There are very few soft surfaces at the Mac, and a lot of things that simply deflect sound (like the cement floor, the huge water “fountain”, etc), so make sure that you also keep you bass turned down and you mid and treble up a little.  This will help the sound from getting “muddy”.
When people use the mic for a prayer or toasts or speeches, also turn down the bass on the mic line they are using or it will sound like the teacher from the Peanuts cartoons, and that’s not good.

Load In:

Load in is easy. You'll park outside the main door and move your gear to the stage. A cart shouldn't be necessary.

Challenges:

The venue's acoustics will provide you with a challenge. Remember, speakers are on the floor of the stage. Do a good sound check and then walk around and take a look at how things are sounding with people in the building.

Extra Venue Call Questions:

None, but be sure to ask all the basic venue call questions.
